Census Info & Residency Verification
New residents of Belmont are encouraged to visit the Town Clerk's office on the ground floor of Town Hall to fill out the census, register to vote, and license pets.
Massachusetts General Laws Ch. 51, Section 4 require an annual listing of residents as of January 1. By filling out the annual census, you
- Provide proof of residence to protect your voting rights
- Are able to register children in schools
- Can apply for veteran's bonus, subsidized housing, and related benefits
- Provide information to the 911 emergency system
Failure to respond to the census mailing shall result in removal from the Active Voting List and may result in removal from the Voter Registration rolls.
Residents should notify the Town Clerk's office in writing of any change of their primary residence location, within Belmont or out of town. In order to remove a registered voter from the census, an original signature from the voter is required.
Certified letters of residency may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office at no cost; however, you must appear in person with a valid ID before a certified letter can be issued.
Current Resident Lists
A printed book of current residents can be obtained at the Town Clerk's office for $25. This data is up to date through June 30. Previous years (if available) are $10.
You may also receive the most up-to-date list of residents for free by filing a Public Records Request.
Archive of Resident Lists
Thanks to the efforts of the Library Trustees, the Library Director, and the dedicated staff at the Belmont Public Library, the Belmont Resident Lists from 1911 to 2009 are now available online.
Any years not included in the online archive may be viewed in person at the Town Clerk's office by appointment only. You may also view these records in person at the Belmont Public Library during normal business hours.
Due to the construction of a new Library, the Belmont Public Library has moved to the Beech Street Center. See their business hours.
If you have any questions about the digitization of the Resident Lists, you may contact the Belmont Public Library at 617-993-2850.
